本片主要介绍黑人女歌手比莉·荷莉黛的生平故事，是一部“历尽沧桑一美人"式的文艺歌唱大悲剧。片中对毒品之为害描写甚为深刻，但对女主角吸毒原因则交代得简略，未能拍出深度。在片中饰演比莉·荷莉黛的戴安娜·罗丝是“至尊者"合唱团的女歌手，她首次亮相银幕即表演得十分落力，她因此被提名奥斯卡金像奖。另外比利狄·威廉斯、李察·普瑞尔等的表演也不俗，片中配乐由米契利·格兰创作。
