此时的德国正要面对着第一次世界大战战败后所产生的恶性通货膨胀。 爱德来到一个无法使用炼金术的世界（即现实世界），为了寻找回到他原来世界的线索，便与他弟弟相似的另一个青年阿尔冯斯·海德利西一起进行火箭的研究，但对爱德而言，漫长的两年时光过去，相对能找出回到原来世界的机会也越来越渺茫。 一日，与阿尔冯斯一同前往嘉年华会的爱德，遇到了一位名为“诺雅”的吉普赛女性。 拥有不可思议力量的她，有着只要借由接触对方就能看见被接触者的内心及想法的能力。她是被当时德国人称为“次等民族”的吉普赛人中的一员，她们自称“罗姆（Roma）”。由于她的出现，使得爱德被卷入当时纳粹外围组织“杜利协会”正要发起的计划，即寻找并入侵一个名为香巴拉的国度，同时也意味着炼金术世界将面临危机。

《钢之炼金术师》是日本著名动漫，由漫画家荒川弘创作，背景设定在炼金术相当发达的世界。爱德华·艾尔利和他的弟弟阿尔冯斯十分思念亡故的母亲，为了再次见到母亲的微笑，而进行炼金术中最大的禁忌人体炼成，欲将死者复活的炼成术。可是炼成失败时的反弹效应，爱德付出“通行费”左脚、阿尔则失去全身。为救回弟弟，爱德牺牲自己的右臂作为代价，将弟弟的灵魂固定在一副铠甲上。失去的右臂和左腿由钢制义肢“机械铠”来替代，因此在取得国家炼金术师资格时、大总统给予“钢”的称号，人们称之为“钢之炼金术师”。

故事内容根据十八世纪法国传奇人物神探维托真人真事改篇，剧情曲折离奇，出乎意外，集悬疑、惊栗、动作、迷离于一身。描述法国影帝谢勒迪柏度饰演的神探维托突然失踪，更盛传被一个戴镜子面具的魔人杀死，传闻镜子面具拥有吸去人类灵魂的诡异力量，牵涉整个巴黎多宗神秘谋杀案，顿然引起一阵恐慌。青年新闻记者波艾伦（格廉加纳饰演）遂展开追查，更联同神探维托拍档尼马及一神秘女子（安娜莎达饰演），逐一查访多位证人，怎知期间陆续发生多宗“电击杀人案”，不少贵族陆续被离奇闪电轰毙，而曾被追访过的目击证人亦相继被人割喉而死，波艾伦更查出此事与城中大批处女突然失踪有关，令剧情更趋向高潮。每个线索都可改变故事发展，最后关键却在维托自己身上……
