Bối cảnh phim trong cuộc Đại khủng hoảng - thời kỳ suy thoái kinh tế từ năm 1929 đến hết các năm 1930 ở Mỹ. Nội dung xoay quanh cuộc đấu trí đấu tài tình giữa một trong những nhân viên đầu tiên của FBI là Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) và tên tội phạm John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) cùng đồng bọn Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum), những kẻ cướp nhà băng lừng danh đã gây ra làn sóng tội ác kinh hoàng tại vùng Trung Tây nước Mỹ.
