William Wilson (av Louis Malle) är den schizofrena historien om en sadistisk officer som efter ett liv av tyranniska missgärningar blir dömd och driven till vansinne av sin egen dubbelgångare. Toby Dammit (av Federico Fellini) är en mästerlig uppvisning i hur kändisskapets svalg kan sluka den självupptagne. Terence Stamp gör en andlös rolltolkning som en filmstjärna på besök i Rom som förlorar sig i en labyrint av paparazzis, alkohol och storhetsvansinne.
