Minte, insala, se dueleaza, urca pe scara sociala si sfarseste intr-o casatorie de interes cu contesa Lyndon. In secolul XVIII, intr-un mic oras din Irlanda, Redmond Barry este un tanar fermier si este indragostit de verisoara lui, Nora Brady. Nora se logodeste cu un capitan englez, iar Barry il provoaca pe acesta la un duel cu pistoale. Dupa ce castiga duelul, Barry pleaca spre Dublin. Fiind jefuit pe drum, Barry trebuie sa se inroleze in armata si sa lupte in Razboiul de sapte ani. Dupa un timp, dezerteaza si intra in armata prusaca pentru care devine spion.
