Gago desde criança, o príncipe Albert é o segundo na linha de sucessão ao trono britânico e por vezes tem de discursar, sentindo-se péssimo consigo mesmo. Após todos fracassarem, decide falar com Lionel Logue, terapeuta da fala pouco convencional e com métodos pouco ortodoxos. Mas à medida que os resultados vão surgindo e a tarefa toma importância perante a coroação iminente de Albert, cresce a amizade e confiança entre ambos.
