A sociedade automobilística francesa Altra quer fazer-se vingar no salão Automóvel de Amesterdão com um protótipo engenhoso de caravana desenhado pelo Sr. Hulot. Este irá acompanhar, juntamente com Maria, a jovem e mimada relações públicas da empresa , o camião onde o protótipo seguirá até Amesterdão. Nesta viagem irão surgir uma série de peripécias que atrasarão a chegada e mudarão a postura de Maria para com os que a rodeiam.
