October 5, 1974: In the suburbs of Santiago, pregnant Carmen is badly injured and her partner Miguel, head of the resistance against Pinochet's dictatorship, is killed in combat. So begins a journey into the memories of the defeated...
Justina, a young graphologist, finds out that Patricio, her eternal summer love, is getting married in Patagonia, the place where she vacations since she was a child. He decides to travel and arrives in whale season. He is staying at his aunt Amalia's, owner of a restaurant specializing in seafood. Everyone speculates that he comes to interrupt the wedding. She sees her old love again, but the town and its fauna will lead her to an unexpected reunion. The sea and the whales assemble a new universe of identity.
A young boy returns to his birth country, Chile, after a long absence. The house in the country where he lived with his family is up for sale and they all gather to bid the place farewell. Their visit to the "magnetic tree", a local curiosity with strange properties, will awaken almost forgotten feelings and affections in the boy.
Nicolás is furious. Once again they broke into his house and took his bicycle. Outside, in the streets, the city is half destroyed by an earthquake. There is a curfew and Pinochet is asked if he is going to declare a state of catastrophe. Nicolás accompanies his mother to court to recognize the thief.
Two moments in the life of Pedro. First in 1997, he lives with his family in Rio de Janeiro and works at Gás do Brasil, a company that is undergoing a tough restructuring process, with layoffs and early retirements. Soon, privatization will come. In the second moment, two years later, Pedro lives retired in his hometown Barbosa, in the company of his childhood memories, his dog and his girlfriend. By interweaving these two moments in time, we put ourselves in Pedro's skin and experience his fears and delights.
En algún lugar del cielo is an autobiographical documentary about the director's personal experiences after the coup d'état on September 11, 1973 in Chile. She and her mother went into exile in the former GDR. While her father, the journalist Augusto Carmona, a militant of the MIR, remained in Chile in hiding until 1977 when he was murdered by the CNI. Based on these two events, the documentary reconstructs the story of those who stayed in Chile fighting to overthrow the dictatorship and of those who went into exile and suffered uprooting.
