Livet er som et kulinarisk lykkehjul. Noen ganger vinner man den store potten uten at man først innser det. To gudfryktige, danske prestedøtre ansetter på slutten av 1800-tallet en fransk kvinne i landflyktighet, som kokk i sitt hjem. Kvinnen har flyktet i all hast fra Frankrike hvor ektemann og sønnen ble drept. Årene går, og Madame Babette hjelper til hjemme hos de to aldrende søstrene Martina og Philippa. En dag vinner Babette 10000 franc i et fransk lotteri, og hun bestemmer seg for å lage festmiddagen til minne om søstrenes far, som hadde fylt 100 år hvis han hadde levd. Søstrene gir sitt samtykke - men begynner å tvile da kokka tar med seg levende skilpadde og andunger hjem! Før middagen bestemmer de tolv seg for ikke å nyte maten, men da hadde de ikke regnet med generalen som gjester dem under måltidet.
