Vi befinner oss i Los Angeles, året er 1970. Den rusglade detektiven Larry "Doc" Sportello må finne ut hva som skjedde etter at hans eks-kjæreste forsvant på mystisk vis. Filmen er basert på Thomas Pynchons roman med samme navn.
En privatdetektiv etterforsker noe som ser ut som et selvmord av en falmende pornostjerne i 70-tallets Los Angeles, men oppdager en konspirasjon. En sliten, men brutal pengeinnkrever er på samme sak, og dermed blir de tvunget til å samarbeide - med noe utradisjonelle metoder i bakhånd.
Hans siste sak kan bli den mest innbringende, men den bringer ham også til en ondskap han aldri før har opplevd. Forsvarsadvokat Mickey Haller avtaler å ta saken til Louis Roulet, en glatt playboy og eiendomsmegler. Roulet er anklaget for overfall og hans mor vil gjøre hva som helst for å renvaske sønnens navn og rykte, koste hva det koste vil. Mickey har dermed fått sin første virkelig generøse kunde på flere år, og sammen med medhjelperen Paul Levin ser han nærmere på saken. Et stadig mørkere bilde av Roulet åpenbarer seg. Så skjer et nytt mord, og Mickeys egen moral stilles på prøve.
Marlowe får i oppdrag å beskytte general Sternwoods ustyrlige datter, Carmen. Datteren er ikke særlig interessert i at han foretar seg noe som helst, men Marlowe lar seg ikke stoppe verken av vakre kvinner, penger eller kuler.
En gruppe gjester inviteres til et luksuriøst feriested der alle ønsker oppfylles, men så tar oppholdet på øya en grusom vending.
Dette er den andre spillefilmen basert på tv-serien Tales From The Crypt som igjen er basert på en amerikansk skrekktegneserie utgitt på 50-tallet. Konseptet til denne serien er korte grøssere med en smule humor og noe mer blod. Handlingen dreier seg rundt et bordell befolket av vampyrer. En privatdetektiv får i oppdrag å finne en gutt som forsvant etter et besøk på bordellet. Hun vil nemlig redde broren sin fra de blodsugende skjønnhetene.
Privatdetektiven Tom Welles er en fremgangsrik mann. En dag får han en henvendelse fra en rik enke. Hennes innflytelsesrike mann døde nylig, og etter mannens død oppdaget hun en 8 mm-filmrull som lå gjemt i et pengeskap. Den lydløse filmen viser et grovt, men muligens iscenesatt mord på en ung kvinne, utført av en maskert figur. Enken er dypt sjokkert over filmens innhold, og vil at Welles skal finne ut om kvinnen er i live. Welles tar saken, og blir etterhvert ledet inn i pornoindustriens underverden.
