Bakary Diallo meldt zich in het jaar 1917 aan bij het Franse leger. Hij wil zich bij zijn zeventienjarige zoon Thierno voegen die tegen zijn wil in dienst is getreden. Samen trekken ze naar het front waar Thierno, tijdens zijn volwassenwording, door zijn meerdere aangespoord wordt om zich tot in het hart van de strijd te begeven. Intussen wil Bakary niets liever dan zijn zoon levend en wel naar huis te brengen.
