De film vertelt het levensverhaal van Harriet Tubman. In de negentiende eeuw streeft zij naar het afschaffen van de slavernij. Zelf is ze ook jarenlang slavin tot ze in 1849 weet te ontsnappen. Vanaf dat moment helpt ze honderden lotgenoten uit het Zuiden te ontsnappen via de zogenaamde smokkelroutes, beter bekend als de Underground Railroad.
