Unlike the TV series, this special episode is not a regular episode of Dragon Tales. Instead, it is a conglomeration of Dragon Tales music videos thematically woven together by a story featuring real-life children.

Big Bird and his Sesame Street friends are mysteriously expelled from their neighborhood, finding themselves in Manhattan. They team up with a plucky history show host Sally Hawthorne who’s on a quest to save her show and prove that Sesame Street actually exists, with obstacles created by the “evil” Mayor, with reasons of his own for keeping Sesame Street hidden from the world.

Silliness and surprise twists abound in the half-hour special, in which Elmo teams up with Abby Cadabby via video chat for a virtual scavenger hunt. Aided by Sesame Street friends Big Bird, Grover, Rosita, Oscar the Grouch, Bert and Ernie, Elmo's dad Louie, and tiger Mr. Stripey, the duo invites children to join in the search for all seven items on their list...along the way, "Monster Foodies" Cookie Monster and Gonger whip up a tasty summer dessert, Amy Sedaris shares an easy craft the whole family can make, and Gabrielle Union leads Elmo and Abby in a sweet sing-along.

Finally, Elmo goes to the North Pole, where Santa has some expert advice about the true spirit of Chirstmas - and the perfect gift for Dorothy!
