Zusammen suchen Skelett und Junge im Totenreich nach de la Cruz, wobei allerdings die Zeit drängt: Zu lange darf Miguel nicht in der Unterwelt bleiben…

Die Emanzipationsgeschichte des biblischen Helden Moses, der vom fremdbestimmten Zögling des Pharaos zum selbstsicheren Befreier des Volkes Israel reift: Als Neugeborener an den Gestaden des Nils ausgesetzt, um so den Häschern des Herodes zu entkommen, wird der kleine Moses von einer ägyptischen Prinzessin gefunden und großgezogen. Nach seiner Flucht in die Wüste und der Hochzeit mit der Nomadenschönheit Zippora erhält er schließlich den göttlichen Auftrag, die geknechteten Juden ins Gelobte Land zu führen.

Erzählt wird anhand von Fakten und verfilmten Gerüchten die Entwicklung der Musikszene von Manchester von den späten 1970er Jahren bis zum Jahr 1997. Die zentrale Figur im Film ist Tony Wilson, der den Zuschauer durch den Film führt und sich des Öfteren kommentierend zur Kamera hinwendet. Zentrale Motive der Handlung sind die Entstehung und Entwicklung des Musiklabels Factory Records sowie der involvierten Bands. Die erste Hälfte des Films beschäftigt sich dabei vor allem mit Joy Division / New Order, die zweite Hälfte mit den Happy Mondays, wobei auch andere Bands aus dem behandelten Umfeld, wie A Certain Ratio und The Durutti Column dargestellt werden. Mehrere Personen, wie Tony Wilson selbst, Howard Devoto von den Buzzcocks, Mark E. Smith von The Fall und viele andere haben kleine Auftritte am Rand der Handlung.
