Im Jahr 1755 kehrt der Hauptmann Ludwig Kahlen, unehelicher Sohn einer aus armen Verhältnissen stammenden Mutter, vom Kriegsdienst nach Dänemark zurück. Entschlossen verfolgt er ein ehrgeiziges Projekt, das für ihn die Möglichkeit zum gesellschaftlichen Aufstieg bedeutet: die Urbarmachung der kargen dänischen Heide durch Kartoffelanbau. Als Belohnung für die Gründung einer Siedlung verlangt Kahlen vom König einen Adelstitel. Doch der in der Nähe lebende reiche Landbesitzer Friedrich De Schinkel entpuppt sich als erbitterter Gegenspieler – und grausamer Despot. Als zwei von de Schinkels Leibeigenen sich auf Kahlens Hof flüchten, eskaliert die Situation. In wuchtigen Tableaus schildert Nikolaj Arcel das Ringen mit der Natur, das Leben im Rhythmus der Jahreszeiten, die körperlich zehrende Arbeit des Rodens, Säens und Erntens. Kahlens entgegen allen Widrigkeiten emporwachsende Siedlung wird zum Refugium der Ausgestoßenen, zum utopischen Ort inmitten einer gnadenlosen Ständegesellschaft.

Die Festung der weißrussischen Stadt Brest ist eines der ersten Ziele der Deutschen Wehrmacht zu Beginn des Russlandfeldzuges. Die in der Festung stationierten 300 Offiziersfamilien und 9000 Soldaten werden von dem Angriff im Schlaf überrascht und erleiden heftige Verluste. Es herrscht Panik, doch den Offizieren Gawrilow, Kischewatow und Fomin gelingt es, die Verteidigung an drei Frontabschnitten zu organisieren und die Deutschen zurückzudrängen. Die Wehrmacht reagiert auf die unerwartet starke Gegenwehr mit dem Einsatz von Stukas und Panzern. In der Festung werden Munition, Essen und Wasser knapp, die ärztliche Versorgung ist katastrophal. Die drei Offiziere entscheiden sich zum Ausbruch aus dem deutschen Kessel. Ein Kampf bis zum letzten Mann beginnt.

Während Elizabeths Vater Angst hat, sie könnte zu alt zum Heiraten werden, bedroht die Briefaffäre Scotts Verlobung. Als er durch einen Unfall eine Weile im Koma liegt und nicht antworten kann, trifft Elizabeth einen Offizier namens Danby, der Scott verblüffend ähnlich sieht - was sie allerdings nicht weiß.
