1858年、南北戦争前夜のアメリカ南部。鎖につながれ、馬車で運ばれる途中だった黒人奴隷のジャンゴは、賞金稼ぎのシュルツの手によって自由の身となり、お尋ね者たちを追う彼と行動をともにすることに。やがて2人は奴隷市場で互いに生き別れとなったジャンゴの愛妻ブルームヒルダを救出すべく、極悪非道な白人農園領主のキャンディと、彼にかしずく老獪な奴隷頭のスティーヴンのもとへ奴隷商人を装っていざ乗り込むの。
