家でも学校でも居場所のない高校生エヴァン・ハンセン は、ある日自分宛てに書いた手紙を同級生のコナーに持ち去られる。その後コナーは自殺し、手紙を見つけた彼の両親は、文面から息子とエヴァンが友人だったと勘違いする。彼の家族をこれ以上悲しませたくない一心で、思わずエヴァンはコナーと親友だったとうそをつく。彼らに聞かれるままに語ったありもしないコナーとの思い出は、人々を感動させSNSを通じて世界中に広がっていく。
