U želji da zaboravi smrt svoje žene Rebecce, bogati aristokrat 'Maxim' de Winter (Laurence Olivier) odlazi u Monte Carlo. Tamo upoznaje stidljivu Mrs. Edythe Van Hopper, udvara joj se i njih dvoje se uskoro i vjenčaju. Međutim, sreća mlade supruge bit će prekinuta onog trenutka kada njih dvoje dođu na na Maximovo imanje.
