סטיב יאנג, תסריטאי של מערכונים קומיים בתכנית הלילה של דיוויד לטרמן, מוצא באופן מפתיע תקליטים עם שם מוזר. החקירה העצמית שלו מביאה לגילוי של ז'אנר מוזיקלי חדש ומרתק – מחזות זמר "מסחריים". מסתבר שבשנות ה-50 הופקו מחזות זמר, שעסקו במוצרי צריכה – אמבטיות, טרקטורים, מוצרי סיליקון, מכוניות וכו'. זה נחשב למעין זרם סודי בתעשיית הבידור. יאנג מחליט להתחקות אחר המלחינים, הכוראוגרפים וכוכבי ברודוויי שלקחו חלק בתעשיית הבידור המיוחדת הזאת, ובדרך מציג אהבה גדולה לססגוניות של מחזות הזמר ולומד גם כמה דברים על עצמו.
