סרטו עטור האפקטים של בסון לוקח אותנו אל ניו יורק של שנת 2259. נהג מונית בשם קורבן דאלאס, מסתבך עם כוחות הרשע המחפשים את השליטה באלמנט החמישי - הנוסף למים, אדמה, רוח ואש. כמובן שאת ההגנה צריך דאלאס לתת לבחורה ג'ינג'ית מדהימה - לילו - הלבושה על פי עיצובו של ז'אן פול גוטייה המעצב המופרע והכשרוני. הסרט התבשל בראשו של בסון כבר מגיל 16 ופתח את פסטיבל הסרטים החגיגי בקאן של שנת 1997.

עשורים אחרי מאורעות הסרט הקודם, המכונות מצאו קוד חדש ואכזרי במיוחד לכליאת תודעת בני האדם בעולם וירטואלי של תודעה כוזבת. ניאו שוב מוצא את עצמו במפתיע במרכז התכנית להצלת האנושות. או שאולי מדובר רק בהזיות שמתרחשות בראשו שלו?

המכונות שאחראיות על המטריקס שמו על הכוונת את ציון, המוצב האחרון שנמצא בשליטת בני האדם. עכשיו הצוות חייב להגן עליו.
