Brian McVeigh, courtier en bourse, est un rustre, un peu plat et vulgaire. Il va se marier mais ne peut se résoudre à quitter tout à fait sa coquette garçonnière de Greenwich Village. Pour amortir les frais, il sous-loue l'appartement à deux personnes, à raison de deux jours chacune par semaine. Cet arrangement convient à Sam Lester.
