Ce pourrait être la chance de sa vie : Le chef d'orchestre Zoltan Szanto, pratiquement inconnu en Occident, se voit offrir la chance unique de diriger le chef-d'oeuvre de Richard Wagner, "Tannhäuser", au célèbre Opéra de Paris. Cela pourrait être pour lui un énorme bond en avant dans sa carrière. Mais ce ne sera pas facile : la mise en scène sera pour Szanto un combat qui le mènera aux limites de sa personnalité.
