Tämä loistava jatko-osa ensimmäiselle Kummisetä -elokuvalle jatkaa Corleonen perheen mahtimiesten tarinaa. Toisessa osassa ohjaaja Francis Ford Coppola kertoo rinnakkain kahden sukupolven elämästä: Don Viton lapsuuden ja nuoruuden - roolissa lahjakas Robert De Niro - ja perheen nuorimman pojan Michaelin (Al Pacino) nousun uudeksi Doniksi. Ensimmäisen Kummisedän näyttelijäkaarti jatkaa rooleissaan, ja he ovat Coppolan johdolla tehneet kiistatta elokuvahistorian parhaan jatko-osan. Elokuvan tarina sijoittuu konservatiiviseen amerikkalaiseen pikkukaupunkiin 1970-luvulla. Vasta 13-vuotias Cecilia Lisbon yrittää tappaa itsensä. Cecilia on yksi viidestä kauniista sisaresta ja itsemurhayrityksen myötä saamme mahdollisuuden tarkastella perheen elämää lähemmin. Sisarusten vanhemmat (James Woods ja Kathleen Turner), yrittävät suojella tyttäriään kaikelta pahalta, mikä ei suinkaan vähennä tyttöjen viehätysvoimaa poikien silmissä. Itsemurhayrityksen jälkeen perhe sulkeutuu omiin oloihinsa ja tytöt kiinnostuvat kuolemasta yhä enemmän ja enemmän. Kun koulun tavoitelluin kundi, Trip Fontaine (Josh Hartnett) saa suostuteltua Lux Lisbonin (Kirsten Dunnst) lähtemään kanssaan tanssiaisiin, alkaa tapahtumasarja, joka muuttaa kaikkien osapuolten elämän lopullisesti.
