Ambitsioonikas noor džässtrummar Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller) õpib mainekas konservatooriumis, janunedes olla parimatest parim. Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) on pedagoog, kes on tuntud nii oma akadeemilise võimekuse kui ka küsitavalt tooreste meetodite poolest.
