Ο Μάξιμος Δέκιμος Μερίδιος είναι ο καλύτερος και παράλληλα πιο λαοφιλής από τους στρατηγούς του αυτοκράτορα Μάρκου Αυρήλιου, ο οποίος όταν πεθαίνει τον αφήνει ως διάδοχο του θρόνου, υποσκελίζοντας τον ίδιο το γιο του, τον Κόμμοδο, με την ελπίδα πως ο Μάξιμος θα μπορέσει να λειτουργήσει ως γέφυρα για τη μετάβαση από τη μοναρχία προς τη δημοκρατία. Ωστόσο ο δολοπλόκος Κόμμοδος θα κατορθώσει να τον βγάλει από το προσκήνιο, καθαιρώντας τον και καταδικάζοντας τον σε θάνατο. A story that follows Nalan Yue, a man with two identities.
