Όταν ο Πλέινβιου πληροφορείται μυστηριωδώς ότι σε μια μικρή πόλη κάπου στα δυτικά αναβλύζουν τόνοι πετρελαίου, αποφασίζει να πάρει την τύχη στα χέρια του και μετακομίζει μαζί με το γιο του H.W. στη σκονισμένη Little Boston. Σε αυτή την πόλη, όπου το κέντρο της ζωής των κατοίκων είναι η εκκλησία του χαρισματικού ιεροκήρυκα Έλι Σάντεϊ, o Πλέινβιου και ο H.W. «πιάνουν την καλή». Ωστόσο, αν και όλοι πλουτίζουν χάρη στην πετρελαιοπηγή, τα πάντα αλλάζουν καθώς οι συγκρούσεις κλιμακώνονται και κάθε ανθρώπινη αξία απειλούνται από τη διαφθορά, την απάτη και τη ροή του πετρελαίου.

Η οδύσσεια του δεν έχει τέλος και η μια αστεία περιπέτεια διαδέχονται την άλλη, ώσπου ο Βρώμικος... Τζο φτάνει στο Λ.Αντζελές και τότε γίνεται... ο ήρωας με τη σφουγγαρίστρα!
