Film se obrací do historie východní Asie a obsahuje akční sekvence, romantiku i erotiku. Odehrává se v Šanghaji během druhé světové války. Odbojová skupina naplánuje vraždu tamějšího bosse, japonského kolaboranta Yee, kterou má provést mladičká Wang Jiazhi. Jakmile se ale celý podnik rozjede, uskutečnit vraždu není tak snadné. Yee i Wang upadají do tajuplného vztahu, kde jeden nemůže mít druhého a přesto bez sebe nemohou být… V hlavních rolích se představí asijská superhvězda Tony Leung (Stvořeni pro lásku, Hard Boiled, Volavka ad.) a mladá čínská herečka a režisérka Tang Wei. Postavu manželky pana Yee ztvárnila čínská herečka a režisérka Joan Chen, kterou diváci znají z množství západních produkcí (např. Poslední císař).

Několik důchodců náhodou objeví opuštěný bazén a začnou ho pravidelně navštěvovat. Jaké je jejich překvapení, když zjistí, že je začínají opouštět jejich choroby a znovu dostávají chuť do života. Ne, není to zázrak – mají v tom prsty mimozemšťané, kteří v bazénu ukryli to, co jim patří. Nevadí jim, že někdo objevil jejich tajemství. Dokonce jsou ochotni pomoci ještě víc...

Gu-nam dře jako taxikář v Yanbian (korejská autonomní prefektura severovýchodní části Číny), aby mohl splatit půjčku, kterou si vzal, aby mohl poslal manželku za prací do Jižní Koreje. Desperate to turn the game around, Nangou hands the game over to Akagi after teaching him a few of the rules. The mafia can only smirk as Akagi sits down to play. However, they soon come to learn that Akagi is a natural born gambler. An imposing figure who does not fear death. One who is destined to become a legend.

The story is set in Hiroshima Prefecture's Onomichi City, where a high school student Nashiko Jippensha was kicked out of her house. Without a place to play with her friends, she learns that the mahjong parlor that her father used to run is now vacant. She fixes the mahjong parlor and turns it into a place where she and her friends can have fun, cook, have tea, and sometimes play mahjong.

Nodoka Haramura's appearance on television playing in a high school mahjong tournament inspires her old Jr. high school friends to reform their schools club so they can meet and play her in the National High School Mahjong Tournament.
