Mentre Sherman Klump, un professor universitari de bon cor però extraordinàriament gros, està fent un important estudi sobre la reestructuració de l'ADN, coneix la Carla, una nova professora, i se n'enamora. Frustrat i acomplexat per la seva aparença rodona, decideix provar en si mateix una revolucionària fórmula per perdre pes.
