Frank, un lladre de poca muntanya, rep un dia l'encàrrec de robar una pintura de Matisse. Frank decideix efectuar el robatori tres dies abans del previst per, abans d'entregar el quadre al seu comprador, poder passar així unes petites vacances en un lloc remot de Nova Anglaterra al costat de la seva núvia, Roz. Mentrestant, el detectiu de l'FBI que condueix la investigació està convençut que el robatori és obra d'un professional.
