L'escriptor d'èxit Mort Rainey marxa uns dies fora de la ciutat perquè està passant per una mala època: està en procés de divorciar-se de la seva dona Amy i té una crisi de manca de creativitat. En lloc de fer un esforç i mirar d'escriure, es passa hores estirat al sofà, fins que un dia un desconegut es presenta davant la cabana on s'està i li retreu que un dels seus llibres és un plagi d'una idea seva. A partir d'aquí, la vida de Mort encara es complica més.
