Tot està preparat per al viatge inaugural de la nau més moderna que mai no s'hagi creat: la USS Enterprise. La seva jove tripulació té una missió important: trobar una manera d'aturar el malvat Nero que, mogut per la venjança, amenaça tota la humanitat. Però el destí de la galàxia està en mans de dos joves rivals, que van néixer a mons diferents. Un d'ells, Tiberius James Kirk, humà, cerca emocions i és un líder nat. L'altre, Spock, mitjà humà i mig vulcanià, és menyspreat pels vulcanians, per les seves emocions humanes.
